MERCHANT'S SON Illinois Representative Is Third in Republican 'Primary Race. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO. April 14.--James Simp son. jr.. 27-year-old son of one of Chicago's wealthiest merchants, ap peared today to have won the Repub lican nomination for a seat in Con gress from a veteran of seven con secutive terms there. Complete but unofficial returns from the tenth Illinois district gave the young Harvard graduate 28.025 votes in Tuesday's primary election. Ralph E. Church had 27.724, while the in cumbent. Carl R. Chindblom, member of the House Ways and Means Com mittee and a Congressman since 1919. had 22,420. Victory Is Conceded. Simpson's plurality was only 301 In a total of 78.169. but Church's office conceded his margin of victory. The young son of the head of Mar shall Field Co. won his victory on a liberal platform, which included amendment of the Volstead act and submission to the States of an amend ment to the eighteenth amendment which would place control of the liquor question in the peonle and Congress. Among his constituents, if elected in November over Charles H. Thomas Weber, the Democratic nominee, will be the national headquarters of the Wom en's Christian Temperance Union in Evanston. The dry organization sup ported Church. Chindblom suggested a return to 4 per cent beer. Co-sponsor of Vetoed Bill. Weber was co-sponsor of a bill in the Illinois Legislature last year to repeal the State search and seizure act. Gov. Louis L. Emmerson vetoed It. Simpson's announcement of candidacy last July contained a theory that office holders should attend strictly to their current Jobs Instead of building fences lor future positions.

BASIL J. KELLY DIES OF BLOOD POISONING former Automotive Trade Secre tary Succumbs at Georgetown TJ. Hospital. Basil J. Kelly. 30. Washington adver tising man and a former secretary of the Washington Automotive Trade Asso ciation. died today of blood poisoning at Georgetown University Hospital. He had been ill since last Sunday. Well known among advertising men here. Mr Kelly was connected with the Washington Daily News for about seven years. He left that newspaper several months ago, but had returned here re cently. Mr. Kelly was born in Bellows Falls, Vt.. and was graduated from Catholic University here. He Is survived by his mother. Mrs. Mary A. Kelly, 79 Falk land drive, Silver Spring, Md.; a brother. Paul A. Kell*, Yonkers. N. Y„ and two sisters, Mrs. James E. Shif fiette, 1575 Spring place, and Mrs. Paul Taggart of the Silver Spring address. Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock tomorrow' morning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sixteenth street and Park road, with burial at Rutland, Vt.. Sunday. He was a member of Phi Kappa fra ternity of Catholic University and of the Knights of Columbus. Danish co-operative societies' sales last year totaled $334,000,000. Loses Primary i_____- CARL R. N., retired, who died yesterday at his home, the Wyoming Apartments, after a long 111 ness, will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at St Matthew's Catholic Church, with burial in Arlington Na tional Cemetery. The death of Admiral Stuart, who was 85 years old. terminated a naval career that took him through the Civil War. Spanish-American War and the Philippine campaign. He Is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alicia A. Stuart.: a son. Dr. Daniel D V. Stuart, jr.. and a brother, Charles M. Stuart of Albany, N. Y. N., re tired. war-time chief of naval opera tions. v.ho lives at 2420 Tracy place. Admiral Stuart was bom in Albany, N. Y.. September 15, 1847, and while a midshipman in 1863 saw active service in the Civil War. He participated in the last naval action in the Spanish American War and commanded three naval vessels during the Philippine campaign. He was a past commander of the Maryland Commandery of the Loyal Legion and a member of the Army and Navy Club here and in New York and of the Catholic Club ol New York. The body of Dr. Louis A. Bau°r, 67, noted mathematician and scientist, who ended his life Tuesday night by lee ping from a window of his sixth-floor apart ment, at 2853 Ontario road, will be cremated tomorrow in the crematory at Fort Lincoln Cemetery. The cremation will follow funeral services at 2 p.m. in Ail Souls' Unitarian Church, Sixteenth and Harvard streets. The plan to preserve Dr. Bauer's brain for scientific study apparently has been abandoned, as Coroner Joseph D. Rogers has received no request for per mission to remove the organ. The law requires the coroner's sanction before any part of the body may be removed, Dr. Rogers explained. The rites, arranged by John A. Flem ing, acting director of the department of terrestrial magnetism of the Car negie Institution, will be conducted by Rev. Ulysses G. B. Pierce, pastor of the church. Honorary pallbearers will be C. O. Abbott, G F Bowertnan. D. L. Hazard, Capt N. H. Heck, Fulton Lewis, G. W. I Littlehales, C. F. Marvin. J. C. Merriam and George J. Streeter. Besides Mr. Fleming, the active pallbearers will be C. C. Ennis. O H Gish. H. F. John ston. W. J. Peters and W F. Wallace Dr. Bauer, who. because of ill health, retired as director of the Carnegie Terrestrial Magnetism Department about tw'o years ago. jumped from the window while his, wife. Mrs. Adelia D. Bauer, was in another room. Deputy Coroner C. J. Murphy, who investigated, issued a certificate of suicide. A daughter, Mrs. Dorothea Weeks of West Chester. Pa., and a brother, Wil liam Charles Bauer, dean of the school cf electrical engineering at Northwestern University, also survive the scientist. John Park, manager of a coal mine i near Midlothian, Scotland, has reported that, although he has applied to the Ministry of Labor, he could not get enough miners to work and that the j same conditions applied at Foulshiels in the same district.
