BAKER'S STAND ON LEAGUE BEWILDERS DEMOCRATIC LEADERS BOBS UP AGAIN IS RECEPTIVE CANDIDATE However,. Garner and Ritchie Booms Give Roosevelt Greatest Worry Democratic leaders professed Borne bewilderment today as to whether Newton D. Baker is or is not a receptive candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. Virtually all thought of Baker as a candidate has been dropped in recent weeks because of his advocacy of America's entering the League of Nations, the League Court, cancellation of w'ar debts and similar issues politically un popular. Candidacy Looks Up But his statement yesterday that he would not favor a League plank in the party platform and that he would not, if he could, put the United States in the League until convinced a majority of the American people approved such a step, revived to some ex tent speculation as to his can didacy. He said: "I think it would be a great mistake to make a partisan is sue of the League of Nations." At one time it looked as though Baker would get Ohio's vote in the convention. That was some weeks ago. But after he had made several speeches in which he advocated America's entering the League. Ohio Democrats agreed that the State's vote should go to Governor George White. No Change Expected It Is not likely Baker's current statement will cause any change In Ohio's plans. Supporters of Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt here privately ex pressed more apprehension over the growth of the Albert C. Ritchie and John N. Gamer booms than anything else. INSTALLRAINIER FIREMEN Officers of the Mt.
